Student Case Study: Michael Coombs – JD Group

We recently caught up with Apprentice, Michael Coombs, to gather his feedback on how he discovered his Apprenticeship programme opportunity and how it’s going to date.
Michael told Qube: ‘My name is Michael Coombs and I’ve been working for JD Sports for almost 3 years now. I started as an Engineer and I have progressed to Engineering Shift Manager. I wanted to progress further up the ladder and the programme would give me the tools to do so.’
‘I’ve already learned so much from the programme. I enjoy trying out some of the tools, like the Johari window, to see how others perceive me, and finding out what learning style suits me by doing things like the Felder-Silverman test online.’
‘I would have to say learning about unconscious bias was a big eye opener for me, and just knowing we all have biases and how to recognise them will help me to recruit the right candidate in future.’
‘The biggest challenge has been trying to balance work and the programme. I’ve overcome this by doing the time management module, which has given me the knowledge and tools to effectively set aside time to do the programme and keep on top of my workload.’
‘To any potential Apprentices, I would say go for it, as an Apprenticeship is the best way of gaining knowledge and getting hands on experience at the same time. With support from your Tutor and Qube, you’ll breeze through it.’
