Student Case Study: Darren Graham – JD Group

We recently caught up with Apprentice, Darren Graham, to gather his feedback on how he discovered his Apprenticeship programme opportunity and how it’s going to date.
Darren told Qube: ‘Hi, my name is Darren and I’m a qualified Multi-Skilled Engineer. I have four children and enjoy going to the gym and walking the family dog in my spare time. I started my journey with JD Sports as an Engineer four years ago, and for the last two years, I have been a Team Leader.
‘The main reason for applying to complete the Apprenticeship was to improve my leadership and management skills and help me build and manage a successful team.’
‘My career goals are to be the best I can be in whatever I do, and create a healthy work-life balance.’
‘I really enjoyed the project module because there was so much involved in it. It was like doing a course inside a course.
‘One of the first modules that was covered was about Emotional Intelligence (EI), which involves the ability to manage and understand your own emotions as well as that of your team. Understanding EI has helped me build better relationships with my team and not let emotions get in the way of important decision-making.
‘I also enjoyed reading about different motivational theories like Maslow, Herzberg, Vroom, etc, and how these theories could be applied in the workplace.’
