Student Case Study: Sonya Sunderland – Four Seasons Health Care

  • Categories Apprenticeships, General, News Posts, Qube in the Press
  • Date 19th June 2022

We recently caught up with Apprentice and Care Home Assisting Practitioner, Sonya Sunderland, to gather her feedback on how she discovered her Apprenticeship programme opportunity and how it’s going to date.

Sonya told Qube: ‘I am a mother to three grown-up children. I previously worked in an engineering company in an office to suit the children’s school hours, but decided two years ago that I wanted to go into the care sector. I worked six months as a Support Worker, but then felt that a career in a care home was something that I really wanted to do. I have worked for Four Seasons Health Care (FSHC) for just under 18 months and started as a Care Assistant. I then worked my way up to Senior Care Assistant, and now I am the Care Home Assisting Practitioner (CHAP). I love my job, but have always wanted to work in a hospital environment, which I want to pursue in the next six months.

‘I heard about the Apprenticeship programme through my current job, as I needed my Level 3 or working towards to be accepted in the senior care position. I love learning new things and have always accepted any training offered to me, as I feel it makes you more knowledgeable within your job. I love having to think about why I do the things I do at work and what the benefits are of doing something as simple as updating a care plan.’

‘The skills I have learned from doing the Apprenticeship programme have given me greater understanding of the legal standards required to work in the care sector.’

‘I would love to continue to train, learn and develop my skills, and would love to do more specific training, especially end of life (EOL) care, as this is something that really interests me.’

‘To anyone who would like to do the Apprenticeship programme, I’d say to them to go for it and think of it in bite-size pieces, a unit at a time, not the entire course, so that it’s more manageable.’
