It’s all smoke and mirrors with the Skills Bill.

“This legislation will make sure everyone can gain the skills they need to progress into a rewarding job, and businesses have access to a pipeline of talented, qualified employees for their workforces – boosting productivity.”
These were the words from Alex Burghart MP when the Skills Bill passed into law last April. It was announced with a pledge that the Skills and Post-16 Education Act would level up and drive economic growth across the whole country.
But by the time the Autumn Statement followed, there was not a single reference to post-16 education and by the end of 2022, the traineeships ‘brand’ had been retired with funding channelled instead through other streams such as study programmes or AEB.
